A resume is your personal marketing document, designed to ‘sell’ your skills and abilities to a potential employer. Research suggests that readers scan resumes within about 20 seconds (and maybe less), so it’s important to show them at a glance why you are the best fit. Did you realise that many large companies and recruitment firms don’t actually read your resume until it is in the YES pile. They don’t have time to read 100’s of resumes, so they are scanned through various programs that pluck out the keywords. That is the start of the science behind getting that interview.
Writing a winning resume it needs to ensure it is matched to the Job Description in the advertisement. Make the reader’s job easy by showing a clear match between your skills and the job requirements. Clearly demonstrate how you meet the key skills, experience and attributes the employer is looking for. Emphasise your most relevant strengths and eliminate details that are unrelated to the position. Use similar key words in your resume to those used in the job description to create a link in the mind of the reader.
Focus on your Achievements and/or Awards highlighting your key responsibilities is important, but don’t list your daily workload, just a few bullet points. Your resume should focus on the unique accomplishments that make you stand out – what can your bring to the next position? Show how you contributed to the organisation; did you save money or time, exceed targets, solve problems, improve processes, or attract new customers? Where possible, quantify how you added value with numbers, percentages or dollar amounts i.e. increased department turnover by 90% in 12 months. It’s about what you can do for them!
Keep the layout of your resume simple with lots of white space, bulletted information and a plain, readable font – don’t use a template which is loaded with formatting as it blocks any selection proof reading programs and your application will be put in the NO pile. Three or four pages are usually sufficient, so choose clear, precise language. In a few circumstances, at high level managerial positions, will more than 4 pages ever be acceptable. Usually the person reading it just won’t have time to read it all. It’s a good idea to have it proofread by a family member or friend or have a professional prepare your resume.
Clearly have a heading on your resume that states your name and then include your name, address, phone number, mobile number and email address. Next, list the relevant education and training that you have undertaken, starting with your most recent studies. After this comes your career history in reverse chronological order. List your job title, name of the employer, a short description of the company (if appropriate), and the dates you worked there. Then outline your key responsibilities, skills and accomplishments for each role. End your resume by naming your referees. Ensure you include 3 professional, work-related referees and at least one personal referee stating how long you have known this person. Then make sure the referees are aware that you are seeking another position so they are prepared when contacted. To hide your referees says that you are hiding something and therefore just putting another gate or obstacle in the way of your resume being selected.
